Abstract (no more than 300 words):
Food waste is a global mega issue. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), 1.3 billion tons of food are wasted or lost annually, which equals 1/3 of all food produced for human consumption around the world. Food waste not only reduces food available for the hungry, but wastes valuable resources used in production such as land, water, energy and labor, which increase unnecessary green house gas emissions that contribute to climate change.

This presentation will provide a global view of current food waste and food loss challenges affecting the world today in order to provide food for the world’s growing population. An overview of the development of global food waste and food loss reduction approaches throughout the world will be discussed. The audience will also be able to learn how and why food waste reduction approaches are needed at home, work, and at all industry levels. Various aspects of global initiatives on food waste and food loss reduction will be discussed. The presentation will also share resources and ways for dietitians from all over the world to engage and be part of the solution.
